How to make Windows Vista faster will inevitably be a question on the lips of any Vista user. Over time, any computer's operating system begins to slow down somewhat. This is due to the system having to constantly reshuffle programs, scripts or other activities which tend to occur upon "boot up" of the computer. Compared to just 10 years ago, when state-of-the-art processing speed was one-fifth of what it is today, we have it good. However, having an operating system that runs faster can't help but soothe the feelings of any user.

So -- for starters -- what can we do when we begin to notice the system is booting up a bit slower? Well, if we haven't scheduled a regular disc degramentation of our hard drive, then it's time to go in and do one. First, you can go into the Systems and Maintenance page of the Control Panel window (found in the Start Menu at the bottom of the desktop view). You can then select from more than a few different options which will allow you to not only "de-frag" your drive, but also speed up Vista slightly.

Look at the "Administrative Tools" section of the System and Maintenance page. It should be at the very bottom. Select "Defragment your hard drive," and follow the simple instructions. The process may take several hours for the drive to be cleaned up, files reordered and restaged and otherwise lined up efficiently. Your drive, over time, will slice itself up into smaller and smaller sections in order to handle large tasks or complicated programs. Defragging it can help restore some speed to Vista.

Also, go into the Control Panel and click on the "Programs" icon. Once you're in there, you can go uninstall any programs you haven't used in a while and which you know you're not going to need in the future. Plus, cleaning up the history bin and other storage areas related to your Internet experience can help improve performance. Lastly, use a program which helps you go in and identify scripts in your operating system's registry which may be running in the background. These scripts can slow down processing noticeably. Just be careful when performing this operation.

Any PC operating system will become clogged with useless or outdated junk if you let it. Scheduling regular maintenance updates through the "System and Maintenance" page on the Control Panel is the single best thing you can do.
